Summer Job Description
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian church has a strong missional focus within the community. This includes but is not limited to the large food security program, one of the largest in the region that runs year around. St. Andrew’s church is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive space within the downtown neighbourhood that is accessible to many groups of diverse backgrounds and ages. The summer students will be working on the front line with youth accessing our outreach programs, children and youth from the St. Andrews congregation, newcomers and young families from the nearby community. They would be responsible for overseeing on-site programing, assisting with distribution of resources though our foodbank and back-to-school supply programs, as well as planning youth focused meet-up events and recreational activities in collaboration with neighbouring groups and churches. Summer students will assist with planning and implementation of Sunday morning ministry programing for children and teens. Summer students will gain experiences with a variety of problem solving, organizational skills, planning and decision making. Students will also have the opportunity to build proficiency with a variety of online data management tools, basic computer skills, audio-visual equipment and various social media platforms. The summer students will be required to complete all Leading With Care policy prerequisites as set out by the Presbyterian Church in Canada, including a criminal reference check for working with vulnerable populations.
Supervision:
Summer Students will be under the overall supervision of the senior pastor with 50% of daily supervision shared equally between other church staff; the Foodbank Director of Community Missions.
Key Responsibilities and Assigned Job Duties:
- Assisting with daily operations of St. Andrew’s Foodbank. Including but not limited to receiving donations and food deliveries, processing food donations, serving foodbank clients, set up and teardown activities and registration of clients using the food security services both by phone, online and via a shared data base.
- Leading and supporting volunteers throughout all phases of foodbank operations. Organizing groups of youth volunteers who are coming into to pack backpacks and distribute back to school supplies.
- Managing registration for back to school supply supports. Dealing with the public and coordinating with other social service organizations to meet the needs of identified students in our community.
- Supporting office and administrative duties to assist with community outreach programs and church ministries throughout the summer.
- Taking a leadership role in planning and implementation of Sunday morning children’s and youth ministry activities including special events.
- Collaborating with the Senior Pastor, other ministry leaders and youth groups in the community to plan, promote and implement at least 5 youth outreach events. These will combine fellowship, outreach, sports, music and food related activities.
- Collaborating with senior pastor, other ministry leaders and neighbouring churches to plan, promote and organize 2 monthly ‘family fun fair’ community events. These events will take place on church property during the summer.
Gifts and Skills:
- Experience working with children, teens or young adults would be an asset.
- Previous leadership experience in a group setting is important.
- Ability to work independently, demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills will be important.
- The successful candidate(s) will need to be able to work with families, children and youth from diverse backgrounds with sensitivity and respect.
- Interests and skills in music, visual arts and sports is an asset but not required.
- Ability to develop relationships, working with co-workers, volunteers and young people in a cooperative and supportive manner.
- Basic computer literacy and social media skills are required.
